Today (Thursday 19th June 2025) saw the culmination of an amazing project that our society not only was involved with, but we are proud to say, initiated.
A year or so ago, our Secretary, Marion, took it upon herself to research Gresley’s residences in Doncaster, when he was an Engineer at the Plant Works, and where he designed and built the iconic and world famous locomotives the Flying Scotsman and Mallard.
The fact that such a great man, lived and worked in Doncaster, and helped make the Plant Works such an important world class establishment, but had little to commemorate his involvement, pushed us to ask why.
Today this was corrected and a plaque and information board were unveiled by Mayor Ros Jones at Doncaster Railway Station forecourt.
Here’s a selection of photographs taken this morning.
The organisations that helped make it happen:
- City of Doncaster Council
- LNER
- Doncaster & District Family History Society
- Doncaster Civic Trust
- The Gresley Trust
- Great Northern Railway Society
